PC-Lock Version 2.1
Hard Disk Protection System
(c) Copyright 1987 by
Johnson Computer Systems
INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION
Thank you for buying PC-Lock version 2.1. We believe you will
find it to be an effective and convenient security system for
your IBM-PC/XT/AT or compatible. Version 1.1 was reviewed in the
June 23, 1987 issue of PC-Magazine and listed among "The Best of
the Best Utilities." Version 2.1 provides enhanced security and
several new features including:
Simplified multi-system installation,
An administrator password,
Multiple user passwords,
Support for large hard disks,
Support for multiple hard disks,
Works with the EGA controller/display,
Ability to prevent user's from breaking out of AUTOEXEC,
and others described below.
WHAT PC-Lock DOES WHAT PC-Lock DOES
After you install PC-Lock you will be asked to enter a password
each time you boot your computer from your hard disk. Just type
your password and press return. The boot process will continue
normally. When you boot from a diskette the system will boot
normally, but you will not be able to access your hard disk.
Any time after your computer has finished booting from your hard
disk, you may press the shift key on the left side of your
keyboard 3 times in succession. This will cause the screen to
become completely blank. The computer will continue with the
task it was performing, but will throw away any characters typed
at the keyboard (including Ctrl-Alt-Del) until you enter your
password again. The screen and keyboard will then return to
normal.
PC-Lock provides an administrator password and a maximum of four
user passwords, allows you to prevent a user from breaking out of
the AUTOEXEC batch file, and allows a different AUTOEXEC sequence
for each of the five possible users.
PC-Lock is a software security program and is probably somewhat
more secure than a dead bolt lock on your front door. A
sufficiently knowledgeable and determined individual will be able
to circumvent the system, as indeed any software security system
can be circumvented. The level of protection is, however,
sufficient for most purposes. Please note that PC-Lock files are
encrypted, and will not decrypt themselves if someone is using a
debugger to find out how they work.

All PC-Lock passwords consist of one to sixteen characters (key-
strokes). Any key on your keyboard may be used except the return
key. This allows you to create very obscure passwords. Be sure
that you remember them!
